The first 2012 presidential debate: President Obama vs. Mr. 47%, #5

2012 Presidential debates Join the conversation as the candidates square off and watch it live here.

6:31 PM PT: This is a very good point:

So far the debate has been focused on litigating Romney's plan, not Obama's record. That's bad news for the Romney campaign.

6:32 PM PT: Romney says Obama should have fought for Simpson-Bowles. Then Lehrer asks but do you support it? Romney says no, I have my own plan. And Obama should have taken Simpson-Bowles and modified it and proposed it. And Obama says: that's what I did.

6:34 PM PT: Jim Lehrer has lost control. He's like a replacement ref.
— @tbogg via web 6:34 PM PT: I can't see all nets from spin alley.  But the split screen is going to hurt Romney.  His wincing/smirking is constant.  #current2012

6:36 PM PT: Obama landing some tough blows on corporate taxes'and the need to get new revenue by ending tax breaks for companies like Exxon-Mobile. Romney wincing in pain.

6:37 PM PT: Hmmm.

Rule. Whoever uses more numbers and acronyms - and mentions more commissions - loses. So far that's Obama.
— @davidfrum via TweetDeck I guess this means the conservative line is that Obama talked too smart for the stupid American public? Somehow I don't think he's got a clue what he's talking about.

6:38 PM PT: Romney's first "why that" of the night. But I'll give him credit: he's licked the lip smack, I think. At least I haven't noticed it.

6:40 PM PT (Kaili Joy Gray): New thread here.
