Tommy Thompson doubles down on deceptive 9/11 attacks against Tammy Baldwin

Wisconsin Republican Tommy Thompson's desperation isn't abating, if you can judge by the fact that he's still dredging up 9/11 to attack Tammy Baldwin, despite the reciprocal attacks he's opened himself up to. Here's his new ad.

In Thompson's ad, the narrator opens the spot talking about Baldwin's 'shameful campaign falsely attacking Tommy Thompson on 9/11.'

The narrator goes on to say in addition to voting against honoring the victims of 9/11, 'she fought to block funding that provides body armor for our troops just to make a political point.'

'Baldwin even voted against tough sanctions on a nuclear Iran while pocketing sixty grand from a radical pro-Iran group,' the narrator says. 'Tammy Baldwin is too extreme for Wisconsin.'

He's throwing the whole kitchen sink at Baldwin, attacks that Factcheck.org says are "false and vicious." They're also attacks that continue to open up Thompson to a vulnerability he's had for the duration of the campaign: all the money he's got since he retired from government service. He's been beat up by local press over his refusal to release his tax returns. He's been hit for forgetting how many houses he owns. He's been hit for having significant investments in companies doing business in Iran.

And he's been hit particularly for profitting off of 9/11, and in the worst way. He left the Bush administration, got a contract as a private health care provider to treat Sept. 11 workers and volunteers, and failed to provide that care, though his company kept the $11 million contract.

Thompson is running a losing campaign, hence this desperate attack. With all the backlash he's getting for this, to double down on it could indicate that he's even feeling the necessity to try to shore up and motivate his base. There's no other explanation for Thompson exposing his biggest vulnerability.
