The Commander-in-Chief Debate: #1

2012 Presidential debates Join the conversation and watch live here. Plus, chip in $5 for Obama.

5:51 PM PT: So we're 10 minutes away from the third and final debate. Welcome to the party. Tonight should be a good night'knock on wood.

5:52 PM PT: Everyone says foreign policy isn't a top issue for voters. But President Obama wouldn't be president today if he hadn't opposed the Iraq War from the very beginning. So don't tell me foreign policy doesn't matter.

5:54 PM PT: So here are some topics that might come up tonight that might not be considered to be traditional parts of foreign policy debates: outsourcing and offshoring (specifically, Sensata); DADT; and offshore tax havens. (Cayman Islands here we come!)

5:56 PM PT: Which Mitt Romney will show up tonight? The betting seems to be that he'll try to be calmer and cooler than he was in the last debate, avoiding tangling with the president. But I think that'll only be possible if Obama doesn't go after Romney, which I think is unlikely. And if Obama does go after Romney, I have trouble imagining Romney being able to control himself from responding. It'll be an interesting dynamic to watch.

5:58 PM PT: Steve Schmidt on MSNBC just said in hindsight, the Iraq War was a mistake. I'm not sure if that's a new position for him or not, but it's pretty amazing coming from John McCain's campaign manager and a Mitt Romney supporter.

6:01 PM PT: NBC begins with their 47-47 tie poll. Just FYI: both CBS and ABC have come out with polls today showing 2 and 1 point Obama leads, respectively.

6:02 PM PT: Bob Schieffer kicks things off. Says audience has taken a vow of silence.

6:03 PM PT (Kaili Joy Gray): New thread here.
