Connecticut House passes same-day voter registration

Charter Oak Three cheers for the Connecticut House, for bucking the tide and wanting to increase voter turnout by making voter registration simpler, even over the cries of FRAUD!!! coming from Republican members.

Little did we know the threat posed by bratty college students from Virginia looking to adulterate elections.

By a vote of 83-59, the House voted allow the same-day registration, despite complaints by opponents about potential fraud. Nine conservative Democrats broke with their party and voted against the bill. Only one Republican, Livvy Floren of Greenwich, voted in favor. [...]

In an impassioned speech, House Republican leader Larry Cafero of Norwalk gave a hypothetical that "a little brat from Virginia'' could vote by absentee ballot in a presidential election in his home state and then vote while away at college in Connecticut.

"What happened to my vote that was legal?'' Cafero boomed on the House floor. "What happened to my vote that was legal?''

You really can't trust those Virginians, you know. Particularly the bratty ones. They apparently want nothing more than to steal Republicans' legal votes. But only because they have the opportunity to register on election day. Otherwise it wouldn't occur to them, I guess.

Sanity, however, prevailed in the House and the bill moves on to the Senate. If it passes there, it won't go into effect until 2013, at which time Connecticut would join Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Wyoming in allowing same day registration. No word yet on what bratty Virginians have been doing in those states to steal the vote.
