Republican Tommy Thompson has been emulating Mitt Romney in his bid for Wisconsin's open senate seat. He's made his millions, and the taxes he did or didn't pay on that are none of your goddamned business. It's a good opening for Democrat Tammy Baldwin, and she took it. Check out this ad, showing how adamant and angry Thompson is over the tax question.
Thompson: Am I going to release my tax returns? The answer is no. No. [...] The answer is N-O. What part don't you understand?
Thompson is benefitting from a post-primary bounce, according to a new PPP's poll. From previous polling that found Baldwin and Thompson tied at 45 percent, he now has a five point advantage, 49-44. That, PPP found, is a result of "GOP voters getting on the same page. Thompson now leads by 89 points with Republicans, 93-4. Previously he had just a 77 point lead with them at 84-7." His favorability rating has improved, too, up to 46 percent from 40 when PPP polled in July.
The crotchety old man in that video, refusing to come clean on his millions and his taxes, isn't so likable. This is a smart hit on Thompson, one that he completely opened himself up to by telling voters that they'll just have to trust him. Because the last thing a voter is going to trust a politician on is money.
