4:40 PM PT: John Boehner just officially declared Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan the GOP's official presidential and vice presidential nominees. As Barb just put it: "I wish the balloons would fall down now." Alas, there's 3+ more hours until Mr. Bain is done speaking.
4:41 PM PT: Florida GOP Senate nominee and current House Republican Connie Mack is now giving a speech about the importance of being a self-made man.
4:44 PM PT: "We are proud of our success," Mack says. His dad was a U.S. Senator. So was his great grandfather. And his dad's grandfather was baseball great Connie Mack. So, in other words, Connie Mack isn't just proud of his ancestors success. He's enjoying the fruits of it.
4:46 PM PT: Reagan tribute video time! I bet they leave out the part about raising taxes and "amnesty" for immigrants.
4:50 PM PT: So, Newt and Callista Gingrich have taken the stage to honor Reagan. Rachel Maddow reminds us of this quote in the wake of Iran-Contra:
Overall, however, even conservatives acknowledged that the report would hurt Mr. Reagan. ''He will never again be the Reagan he was before he blew it,'' said Representative Newt Gingrich, a Georgia Republican. ''He is not going to regain our trust and our faith easily.''Here's the link. Hahaha, Newt.
4:55 PM PT: Gingrich says Obama "gutted" welfare reform by waiving work requirements. Three weeks ago, Gingrich said there was "no proof" to substantiate that claim.
4:59 PM PT: There's a video going on right now designed to win over Latinos to Mitt Romney. At least the ones who don't self-deport themselves.
5:01 PM PT: And now Mitt Romney's son Craig is speaking in Spanish. So it's really totally safe now to go ahead and self-deport yourself if you speak Spanish too.
5:05 PM PT: Here's George W. Bush's brother, Jeb.
5:06 PM PT: "My brother, well, I love my brother. He is a man of integrity, courage, and honor. And during incredibly challenging times, he kept us safe."
5:07 PM PT: Sure, safe except for 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War, and the financial crisis.
5:07 PM PT: "So Mr. President, it is time to stop blaming your predecessor for your failed economic policies." Jeb, you just said something demonstrably false, and now you make this stupid argument?
5:09 PM PT: "A real leader would accept responsibility for his actions, and you haven't done that." Okay, Jeb. I think President Obama is happy to accept responsibility for saving the auto industry, killing Osama bin Laden, bringing health insurance to all Americans, preventing a great depression, and adding more private sector jobs to the economy in less than four years than Jeb's brother did in eight.
5:12 PM PT: I'm still amazed Jeb Bush had the balls to say his brother kept America safe. That's a bigger lie than anything Paul Ryan said yesterday, from 9/11 to Katrina to Iraq to Afghanistan to Anthrax to the financial crisis, George W. Bush did not keep America safe at all. Not one tiny little bit.
5:14 PM PT (Kaili Joy Gray): New thread here.
