President Obama comments on Supreme Court upholding Affordable Care Act

9:15 AM PT: President Obama just stepped to the podium.

9:16 AM PT: "I know there will be a lot of discussion today about the politics of this ... but that discussion completely misses that point. Today's decision was a victory for the millions of people throughout this country whose lives will be more secure."

9:17 AM PT: If you already have health insurance, you'll keep it. This law will only make it "more secure." No more lifetime limits. They cannot drop you if you get sick. They are required to provide preventive care. And they cannot jack up premiums with no reason.

9:17 AM PT: Because of this law, Americans under the age of 26 can stay on their parents health care plan and seniors no longer will face the donut hole in prescription drug coverage.

9:19 AM PT: President Obama turns to the fact that the law will provide coverage to the 30 million Americans who do not have coverage now. "If you can't afford the premiums, you'll receive a credit that helps pay for it."

9:20 AM PT: Defending the responsibility mandate: "People who can afford to buy health insurance should take the responsibility for doing so."

9:20 AM PT: President Obama points out that "the current Republican nominee" supported the mandate.

9:20 AM PT: "I didn't do this because it was good politics," the president says. He did it because it was the right thing for the American public.

9:21 AM PT: You know how Republicans said President Obama didn't show any guts by going after Osama bin Laden? Well, just think about the enormous political courage it took for him to push forward with health care reform, knowing full well the assault that would come against it, and the enormous risk he faced that the court would find it unconstitutional. That is true leadership.

9:22 AM PT: "The highest court in the land has now spoken. ... With today's announcement, it's time to move forward."

9:23 AM PT: Obama says it's time to implement the law and improve it where possible, but draws a clear line in the sand against Republican obsession with repeal: the most pressing immediate need facing the country is growing the economy and adding jobs. It's a hell of a contrast, and a really serious trap for Republicans, who on July 11 will hold a House vote on repeal.

9:25 AM PT: President Obama is now done'he didn't speak for long, but it really was an incredible exposition of what the Affordable Care Act does'and why now that the Supreme Court has ruled, it's time for the country to move forward. Republicans, meanwhile, are going to be squabbling in the dust left behind.
