Daily Kos has followed up with Richard Lydecker, chair of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party, for a response to Armando's earlier story that Al Lorenzo, founder of the political consulting firm Quantum Results and close adviser to Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, was being considered by the party to run its absentee balloting operation this election cycle. In an email response, which Lydecker also shared with a Daily Kos reader and commenter who contacted him, Lydecker said that the Daily Kos initial report "is false."
When asked if Lorenzo had ever been considered, Lydecker responded (cc'ing his attorney), "MD DEC has not considered Mr. Lorenzo for any services of any kind. We have no further comment." Lydeker did not respond to our request for information regarding who the Miami-Dade Democratic Party considered or engaged to run its absentee ballot operation.
However, Daily Kos has received confirmation from two independent sources, who requested anonymity in fear of reprisals, that in a meeting early in 2012, Lydecker personally announced that Lorenzo was going to be hired to conduct the absentee balloting program. One source received the information directly from Lydecker (and later confirmed by another top Miami-Dade party official), and the second was informed when the issue was raised in a conference call held among Democratic activists in Miami-Dade. That call, according to our source, included people who were in a position to know what decisions were being made by county party officials.
