12:08 AM PT (David Jarman): CA-31 is one of the few remaining question marks out there, but we've gotten a big dump from San Bernardino County (which is the 31st's only county). They say they're 52% reporting, but the numbers have barely budged, and they're still exactly what we don't want: GOPers Gary Miller and Bob Dutton are first and second, at 27 and 25, with Dem Pete Aguilar at 23 and a clutter of other Dems making up the balance.
12:11 AM PT (David Jarman): At least we may avoid the R-vs-R curse in CA-26 and the San Diego mayor's race. In CA-26, we're up to 59% reporting; real Republican Tony Strickland is at 45, Dem Julia Brownley is at 26, and stealth Republican Linda Parks is at 19. And in San Diego, real Republican Carl DeMaio is at 32, Dem Bob Filner is right behind at 29, and stealth Republican Nathan Fletcher is at 24 (that's with 68% reporting).
1:32 AM PT (James L): Team DKE is about to call it a night, but let's just take the pulse of a few outstanding races before we do.
In CA-02, it looks like Republican Dan Roberts will get the second spot below Democrat Jared Huffman, though the AP has yet to ink that glorious red checkmark beside his name. (Dem Norman Solomon trails behind Roberts by just under 1400 votes.) 100% of precincts are reporting, according to the AP.
In the dark red CA-08, with just 28% of precincts reporting, the top two positions remain completely up for grabs. GOP Assemblyman Paul Cook leads Democrat Jackie Conaway by a mere 33 votes, and Conaway herself only leads Republican Phil Liberatore by 218! A pair of other Republicans remain within striking distance, as well.
CA-21 continues to look like a mess for Democrats, with Republican David Valadao swamping the field with an undeniably impressive 59% of the vote. Low budget campaigner John Hernandez leads fellow Dem Blong Xiong by 3% (1000 votes) with 88% of precincts reporting.
In CA-26, we're up to 71% reporting; Strickland has inched down to 44%, while Dem Julia Brownley continues to hold a 26-19 lead over indie Linda Parks.
Finally, in CA-52, Dem Scott Peters now has an 800-vote lead over Lori Saldana with 71% reporting. GOP incumbent Brian Bilbray, meanwhile, has dropped down to a limp 41%.
And with that... we're out for the night!
5:24 AM PT (jeffmd): A few more updates now in the morning:
In CA-08, Dem Jackie Conaway is now in third, 190 votes behind Gregg Imus with all precincts reporting. (Though in California, with the preponderance of vote-by-mail, does that mean a whole lot?)
No call from the AP yet in CA-21, where John Hernandez has a 1,050 lead over Blong Xiong for the second slot with all precincts reporting (again, take that with some salt -- Steve Cooley would be AG right now without absentees/VBMs that were counted later!). David Valadao, the Republican, has a very impressive 57%, though.
No call either in Ventura County's CA-26. Julia Brownley has a fairly safe-looking lead over Linda "Rocky Road" Parks, no doubt thanks to the flood of spending on Brownley's behalf.
CA-31 is looking to be a royal mess, as Dem Pete Aguilar is currently missing the third runoff slot by 1,000 votes...very likely setting up a GOP-internecine for November...in a Dem leaning District. This is a HUGE disappointment for team Blue.
Dem Alan Lowenthal stumbles across the finish line in CA-47. In what should be a red flag for November, Lowenthal captures the first slot, but with only 34% in what otherwise should be a solidly Dem-leaning district. GOPer Gary DeLong is in second with 29%. GOP Ex-Rep. Steve Kuykendall fails in his comeback bid, with just 11%.
In CA-51, [Conserva]Dem Juan Vargas leads the field with 46%, but in a surprise, the GOPer fills the second slot and not Dem state Sen. Denise Moreno Ducheny, as most had expected. At least the man who left this seat open -- incumbent Bob Filner (D) -- makes the runoff for San Diego Mayor.
Lastly, Dem Scott Peters' lead over fellow Dem Lori Saldana is down to about 650 votes in CA-52. As many had expected, this one was bound to be close!
