Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:15 PM PT (jeffmd): No surprise here, but the CA-07 (Sacramento County) matchup has been set between incumbent Dan Lungren (R) and Dem Ami Bera, who came within 7 of Lungren in 2010.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:21 PM PT: There are still a handful of non-California races we're following: The Wisconsin SD-21 recall, NM-01 (D), MT-AL (D), and MT-Gov (R).
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:22 PM PT (David Jarman): We have some unsurprising AP calls in some of the House races, for incumbents. In CA-10, Republican Jeff Denham gets the checkmark; he leads Dem Jose Hernandez and indie Chad Condit 48-29-15 with 44% reporting. In CA-24, Dem Lois Capps gets the check; she's ahead of GOPers Abel Maldonado and Christopher Mitchum 46-35-17 with 6% reporting. And in CA-26, GOPer Tony Strickland gets the check; he's ahead of Dem Julia Brownely and indie Linda Parks 45-26-19 with 37% reporting.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:26 PM PT (jeffmd): A fourth dump of votes has materialized in Racine County. Dem John Lehman is now 3 points ahead of his 2010 pace; he needs 2.55% to flip the seat.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:26 PM PT (Steve Singiser): AP confirms the somewhat obvious in the Shberman Showdown in CA-30'it will be Sherman v. Berman, part deux, in November. Sherman currently leads round one by a 39-34 margin.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:33 PM PT (David Jarman): Some more AP calls in northern California. In CA-02, Dem Jared Huffman gets the first checkmark; no surprise there. The contest is for 2nd between GOPer Dan Roberts at 15 and Dem Norman Solomon at 13. In CA-03, incumbent Dem John Garamendi gets the check. He leads GOPers Kim Vann and Rick Tubbs 53-25-15. And in CA-01, both slots have been called; this dark-red district will have a Dem in it, despite most observers expecting an all-GOP general. It's GOPer Doug LaMalfa at 38, Dem Jim Reed at 25, and GOPer Sam Aanestad (surprising, since he's a former statewide Lt. Gov. candidate) at 14.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:34 PM PT (jeffmd): The second CA-24 slot has been called as well, for Abel Maldonado. He trails Capps 46-35, but with Chris Mitchum drawing 17 off his right flank.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:46 PM PT (James L): Results are trickling in at a tortuously slow pace in NM-01. The latest update, representing 14 new precincts (46% reporting overall), keeps the spread steady at 41-36 for Lujan Grisham over Griego.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:53 PM PT (jeffmd): We were worried about Dem Julia Brownley failing to make the top 2 in CA-26, but some attention may have been better paid to CA-31, where Dem Pete Aguilar is trailing two GOPers - Gary Miller and Bob Dutton - in a nominally Lean D seat. Only 2% reporting, so it's early, but Aguilar's failure to make the Top 2 would truly be devastating.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:54 PM PT (David Jarman): No surprise, but we've got calls in CA-09. Dem incumbent Jerry McNerney and 25-year-old GOPer Ricky Gill are at 50 and 39; they advance to November.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 9:58 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Haha! Here is a bit of a case study in how absurd the "top two" primary system can be: in the red-tinted open seat in CA-08, state assemblyman Paul Cook leads the field. With 17 percent of the vote. Right now, Democrat Jackie Conaway would sneak into the second spot.
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 10:00 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Not a big surprise, but the open and nominally Dem-leaning Inland Empire seat (CA-41) will be a battle in November between GOP county supervisor John Tavaglione and Democrat Mark Takano. Tavaglione leads round one (45-35).
Tue Jun 05, 2012 at 10:01 PM PT (jeffmd): There'd been some concern that Chad "Son of Gary" Condit, as an Indy, would beat out Dem Jose "Astronaut" Hernandez, but that won't be the case. The AP calls the second CA-10 slot for Hernandez.
