5:28 PM PT (kos): Dem official:  In Dane County (Madison) the 2010 turnout was exceeded today 3 hours before polls closed.  Big boost for Barrett.  #wirecall

5:34 PM PT (kos): Remember that we've been subjected to years of whining from Beltway hacks about our "polarized" politics, and how horrible it was for voters. Many an organization has sprouted aiming to tap into this supposed voter frustration.

Yet here we are, in the middle of summer, about to hit (and perhaps exceed) presidential-level turnout in a recall election.

People want choices, and when they get them, they respond.

5:38 PM PT (Steve Singiser): While we await Wisconsin, the polls have closed in New Jersey and South Dakota. While the AP isn't reporting much, here is the link to the South Dakota secretary of state's office.

5:42 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Nothing reporting from South Dakota as of yet, but there is probably a good reason why: half of the state is in the Mountain time zone, where polls are still open for another 15 minutes or so. So, in other words, we can expect to see some results coming from there in a bit.

5:44 PM PT (kos): Democratic Party sources say they have no plans to file any lawsuits to keep polls open longer. And in Wisconsin, that makes sense -- if you are in line at 8 p.m., you get to vote. In other words, they can't shut the door in your face if you are present by closing time.

The big danger for precincts with ballot shortages is that people get tired of waiting and bail. But there's nothing a judge can do about that.

5:50 PM PT (Steve Singiser): Numbers are starting to trickle in from New Jersey. In the primary to replace the late Donald Payne in NJ-10, his son, Donald Payne Jr., leads Ron Rice 52-29. But that's really early (only 3 percent reporting).
