' TX-34: Perhaps the most under-watched nominating battle in the nation is in Texas's 34th Congressional District, a brand-new district in the Brownsville area that is all but guaranteed to send a Democrat to Congress. Next week's runoff pits former congressional aide Denise Saenz Blanchard against attorney Filemon Vela, who also happens to be the son of a former Brownsville mayor. Both candidates have raised very little (Vela $237K, Blanchard $159K), but Vela also loaned himself $150K to run some TV ads, which helped power him to a 40% showing in the May 29 primary. (Blanchard was far back with just 13%, narrowly edging a very crowded field.)
Vela's been back on the air with some generic-y positive spots, but it doesn't seem that Blanchard is doing the same. However, she's sent out some blistering mailers (here and here) accusing Vela of being a closet Republican, saying he's voted in the last three GOP primaries and has given $60,000 to Republican candidates'one of whom is his wife, an elected judge.
