Scott Brown, 'a senator who votes pro-life'

Scott Brown, pledging allegiance to the National Right to Life Committee? Scott Brown, the guy who gives himself all the credit for being the first guy to step up and denounce Todd Akin for his crazy-talk on rape and abortion, says to anyone who will listen that he is pro-choice. He's not fooling the pro-life community with that, though. The state's leading anti-abortion group is throwing their support behind Brown because he's a reliable anti-choice vote.

"We consider him a senator who votes prolife," said Anne Fox, president of the Massachusetts Citizens for Life. "We have to take his word for it when he says he is prochoice. But what we're looking for is someone who votes prolife, and he does." [...]

Raymond L. Flynn, the former Boston mayor who is also nationally known as an antiabortion activist, said that while Brown's record on abortion is "mixed . . . he would be more prolife than his opponent."

"His heart is prolife," said Flynn, who has endorsed Brown.

Brown's spokesperson says, "There are people of good will on both sides of the abortion issue, and Senator Brown welcomes their support, but he is pro-choice and his record going back many years reflects that." But Brown also has an 80 percent approval rating from the National Right to Life Committee, and received the support of this same anti-abortion state group during his 2010 run because of his support for some anti-abortion efforts in the state legislature.

Brown was asked by a report on Wednesday if he would pledge to "never vote in the Senate to curb women's reproductive rights," and he responded, "I have a long record of this already.[...] I'll promise that. I've already been on record on that."

His record is what got him this endorsement. He's already broken that pledge, as his record reflects, when voted for the Blunt amendment. That's the Republican effort to let employers decide whether or not their employees can get birth control through their insurance. That bill most certainly curbs women's reproductive rights. It lets their boss dictate what birth control they use.

So if Brown is so adamantly pro-choice, he's turning down the offer of support from Massachusetts Citizens for Life, right? Of course not. Maybe that's because, in his heart, he's pro-life. That's sure where his votes are.
