Scott Brown says it's all about control of the Senate

Scott Brown caricature Scott Brown, a caricature of an independent vote. In the first debate in the Massachusetts Senate race, Sen. Scott Brown derided Democrat Elizabeth Warren for trying to nationalize the race, for pointing out that he would be a vote for a Senate led by Mitch McConnell and Republican dominance. He's continued to hit her for pointing out that he's a Republican.
'While she'd like to run, apparently, against Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and others, she's running against Scott Brown, and I'm right here,' Brown said last month during a press conference.
But when Scott Brown needs to raise money out-of-state, what's his message?
Four fund-raising pages linked to Brown's website show his campaign making some of the same points emphasized by Warren, that control of the Senate is at stake in their election and that national party affiliation matters.

One fund-raising Web page linked to Brown's website calls his fight against Warren 'the number one Senate race in the country' and urges supporters to donate to Brown because he is 'opposed by Professor Elizabeth Warren, the liberal media, Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and the Obama White House.'

Another Web page on Brown's site, linked to an endorsement by Senator John Thune of South Dakota, urges support for Brown because 'his victory holds the key to a Republican majority in the Senate' and 'his opponent is funded by the national liberals.'

Two others seek support 'to help elect a Republican majority'committed to a Republican-led United States Senate.'

That's the message Brown has been using for the whole campaign outside of Massachusetts. He's promised endless obstruction of President Obama's agenda, promising he would be "the only sure hedge to a potential second term for President Obama" in fundraising appeals to potential out-of-state donors.

Goal Thermometer

Don't forget that August poll by PPP showing that 53 percent of Massachusetts voters would like Democrats to be in charge of the Senate. Brown's appeal in the heavily Democratic state is that he's a local guy who is able to cross party lines, not nearly as bad as all those other Republicans. Busting that myth of Brown, demonstrating that he is first and foremost a Republican who promises to obstruct Obama, is the fundamental key for Warren in convincing the big chunk of voters who are committed to Obama but undecided in the Senate race.

Brown is making that job much easier for her.
