Mazie Hirono celebrates her primary win with supporters. Rep. Mazie Hirono's internal polling leading up to Saturday's primary in Hawaii proved spot on. She defeated former Rep. Ed Case to become the Democratic nominee to succeed Sen. Daniel Akaka. Her polling gave her a 17-point lead going into voting on Saturday, and she won with a 17-point margin, 57.7 percent to 40.9 percent for Case.
But, she didn't take this win for granted, and she's not going to take the polling lead she has over Republican nominee Linda Lingle in the general for granted, either.
Despite a clear fundraising advantage, Hirono didn't treat her primary win like a foregone conclusion in the days leading up to the race. [...]Lingle said in an interview that the race now presents a clear choice'and Hirono doesn't understand that the race is about the people of Hawaii and their future. [...]
Hirono countered that Lingle will be an ally of Republicans, who see Hawaii as a chance to get closer to taking over the Senate, repealing Obama's health care overhaul and cutting taxes for the rich at the expense of working-class families.
"I say to Linda Lingle tonight'let's go," Hirono told supporters.
Hirono actually won twice this weekend, with her primary and with Mitt Romney tapping Paul Ryan, the poster boy for helping the 1 percent at the expense of working families. Making her case against typical Republican Linda Lingle is the easy part. Competing to get her message out to the people of Hawaii is going to be Hirono's big challenge. Republicans want this seat, and they've got plenty of money to burn to try to get it. Lingle raised a million more than Hirono for the primary, $4.4 million, compared to Hirono's $3.4 million.
We're halfway to winning this seat and upgrading the Senate with a true progressive. Let's celebrate this win, and give Hirono a boost in starting the next phase of the campaign.
