After a lengthy stalemate over automatic budget cuts - capped by a closed-door White House meeting with bipartisan leaders that yielded no deal - the president will head to the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue next week to meet with his political rivals in the Senate.I'm pretty sure the media will tell us that the big question about the meeting is whether the president is somehow able to work his will on his Republican counterparts, which is really just a less ridiculous-sounding way of asking whether he has figured out the whole Jedi mind trick thing. But as far as I'm concerned, the big question about the meeting is whether Grand Bargain-obsessed columnists like Bill Keller and Ron Fournier will finally realize that the biggest problem in Washington isn't Obama'it's the Republican freak show, and that the Republican freak show isn't a problem that you can solve simply by sitting down for lunch and nodding your head in agreeable fashion.President Barack Obama will meet with Senate Republicans at a Thursday luncheon on the Hill on March 14, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Wednesday.
Obama has also requested a meeting with House Republicans, although the date has not yet been scheduled.
