Ami Bera's lead over Dan Lungren widens

Ami Bera with President Bill Clinton Ami Bera, 1,779 votes closer to winning. They're still counting in California's 7th congressional district where challenger Ami Bera has maintained a slight lead over Rep. Dan Lungren since Tuesday night. That lead widened with Friday's count, to  1,779 votes.
The two rivals are still separated by less than one percentage point. Bera has won 50.43 percent of the 208,711 votes counted to Lungren's 49.57 percent. Election officials still need to process more than 100,000 ballots submitted throughout Sacramento County, a total that could include tens of thousands of votes in this race.
Bera led Lungren by 184 votes by the end of election night, when about 180,000 votes in the race had been tallied.
Goal Thermometer
The next release of official numbers will be Tuesday. If the margin stays this close, we will most certainly see this go into a recount, an eventuality the Bera campaign did not budget for. Nor did they count on having to keep campaign staff employed, or the possibility of having to hire lawyers'a very distinct possibility, given Lungren's history of pushing doomed legal action and willingness to play dirty.

We're going to be watching this one all the way into December. Let's help Bera get through it.

Please contribute $3 to Bera's recount fund.
