Rep. Louie Gohmert takes bold pro-'lunatic' stance

The House voted on Wednesday to strike the word "lunatic" from all federal laws and only one lawmaker voted against the measure: Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas).

It was unclear initially why the Tea Party favorite opposed the change, and a Gohmert spokeswoman did not return a request for comment. The point of the bill, which cleared the Senate in May with no opposition, is to strike language from current law that contributes to the stigmatization of mental health conditions.

Rather than rebutting Gohmert, I'm just going to thumb through our own rich archives on Rep. Louie Gohmert and his various notions on governmentin'. Oh, here's a good one from the beginning of the year: Gohmert opining on how oil pipelines help caribou have sex:

Here's his theory: The caribou very much enjoy the warmth the pipeline radiates. 'So when they want to go on a date, they invite each other to head over to the pipeline,' he informed his colleagues. It's apparently the equivalent of being wined and dined. And that has resulted in a tenfold caribou population boom, he concluded.

'So my real concern now ...if oil stops running through the pipeline...do we need a study to see how adversely the caribou would be affected if that warm oil ever quit flowing?' he asked.

He's also said that the Affordable Care Act would result in GE having access to the Supreme Court's health care records, and that Obama immigration policies are turning us into a "third world, corrupt country."

That's Rep. Louie Gohmert, always willing to take a bold stand on the issue of laws and lunatics.
