Laura Bush is all for marriage equality'just don't quote her on that

Classy lady Former first lady Laura Bush doesn't want you to know she thinks gays and lesbians should have the same rights as, you know, everyone else.

Yes, that's what she believes. Or at least that's what she's said she believes:

'When couples are committed to each other and love each other then they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has.'

A clip of her saying just that is featured in a new ad that is part of a $1 million media campaign by the Respect for Marriage Coalition. The ad includes clips from Bush as well as Dick Cheney, Colin Powell and President Barack Obama; the goal is to "show voices from both sides of the political aisle supporting gay marriage."

But Bush is none too thrilled with having her own words used to promote marriage equality. The Dallas Morning News reports that she's asked to have her clip removed from the spot.

But Bush spokeswoman Anne MacDonald said in a statement Wednesday that the former first lady "did not approve of her inclusion in this advertisement nor is she associated with the group that made the ad in any way."

It's certainly an interesting request, given that it was Bush who went on TV in 2010 and scored herself some "Wow, I guess not everyone in the Bush family is 100 percent evil" points by saying something that ever more Americans agree with: Gay couples should have the same rights as everyone else.

But apparently applying pressure to make that nicey-nice talk a reality is just too much for the delicate former first lady, so she'd rather give herself some bad press by looking like she's not really in favor of equality after all. Classy!

Too bad for Bush it doesn't really matter. Marriage equality is legal in nine states, Illinois is on the verge of becoming the 10th, and Oregon United for Marriage has gotten off to a strong start collecting signatures to put marriage equality on the ballot for 2014. The Pentagon recently announced it will extend several (not all, but several is a good place to start) rights to gay couples. The president of the United States supports marriage equality. It's coming'even if Laura Bush would rather stay out of the fight. That's fine, we don't need her, and if she wants to be on the wrong side of history with the bigots, so be it. It's what you'd expect from a Bush, after all, isn't it?
