Now Paul Ryan thinks the government shouldn't make your decisions for you. So that's nice. It's that time of year again: the Values Voter Summit, which is pretty much the cheaper, uglier, crazier, wingnuttier, even more Bible-humping-er version of the Conservative Political Action Conference. This is the birthplace of those bizarre conspiracy theory all-caps emails your psychotic uncle forwards you. So of course Paul Ryan will be speaking about how freedom and liberty means being a Republican and something something values something.
But for a man who would like to amend the Constitution so that he can personally make women's decisions for them, these prepared remarks are a little unexpected:
In the President's telling, government is a big, benevolent presence ' gently guiding our steps at every turn. In reality, when government enters the picture, private institutions are so often brushed aside with suspicion or even contempt. This is what happened to the Catholic Church and Catholic Charities this past January, when the new mandates of Obamacare started coming. Never mind your own conscience, they were basically told, from now on you're going to do things the government's way.
So now Paul Ryan doesn't think the government shouldn't make health care decisions for people? He thinks people should instead follow their own conscience? Why, that's ... that's just so ... so pro-choice of him! Sure, it's a little strange, coming from the guy who has fought alongside his BFF Todd Akin to make sure that women must do things the government's way. But hey, thanks, buddy, for flip-flopping and finally agreeing with us Lady-Americans that we don't need people like, oh, say, Paul Ryan, making our decisions for you. It's an unexpected but welcome flip-flop.
Guess running with Mitt Romney is starting to rub off on him.
