Romney campaign planned attack on Obama, but after 9/11, so it wouldn't be tasteless

Mitt tries really hard to be on his serious face. And fails. This is not presidential:

The statement from the Romney campaign was initially released by Romney press secretary Andrea Saul at 10:09 PM ' but under an embargo until midnight on September 12th. In other words, it was embargoed until September 11th was over.

Right. That would be Mitt Romney's statement attacking President Obama and his administration with, as NBC described it, "one of the most over-the-top and (it turns out) incorrect attacks of the general-election campaign."

But since it would be crass to level the accusation against the president that he "sympathize[d] with those who waged the attacks" on 9/11, the Romney campaign forced itself to wait for a whole 15 minutes before flip-flopping and lifting the embargo without explanation. Guess the Romney campaign thought its attack on the president was so good, it just couldn't wait. Faux Republican respect for 9/11 be damned.

Despicable as that is, though, this is worse:

Bear in mind, this was all happening while attacks on US personnel abroad were ongoing. According to a statement released this morning by the White House, the President was told last night that Ambassador Chris Steven was unaccounted for. Only this morning did he learn that Stevens had died in the attacks that were on-going last night.

The campaign also authorized Romney's top foreign policy advisor to give a blistering interview attacking the president while the attacks were continuing.

Americans are under attack, and the Romney campaign'the very same campaign that told us in July that "real Americans" don't care about foreign policy'is beside itself with glee, figuring out just how to blame the president, attack the president, and accuse the president of not caring about American lives and even sympathizing with our enemies.

This is the same Mitt Romney who didn't even bother mentioning the troops in his RNC acceptance speech because:

When you give a speech you don't go through a laundry list, you talk about the things you think are important.

Those Americans who've been serving this country and fighting the Republicans' decade-long war in response to 9/11 aren't important, but whipping up a disgusting and false attack on the president while Americans are under attack? That's what matters. That is important. That's the sort of thing a President Romney would consider his top priority.

Which is one of a million reasons why Mitt Romney is never going to be president.
