7:05 PM PT: Hey, wow, President Obama is saluting "our diplomats, our intelligence officers, and the men and women of the United States Armed Forces" and thanking them for their service. Kind of like when Mitt Romney forgot to thank them at the RNC last year, except the exact opposite.
7:06 PM PT: Obama says: "We will ensure equal treatment for all service members, and equal benefits for their families ' gay and straight." Now, to be fair to George W. Bush, he talked about gay people too during his SOTU. Only difference was that Bush was talking about denying them rights.
7:08 PM PT: "When any Americans ' no matter where they live or what their party ' are denied that right simply because they can't wait for five, six, seven hours just to cast their ballot, we are betraying our ideals. " Obama says he is forming a commission to focus on voting, and he'll ask the lead attorneys for his campaign and Mitt Romney's campaign to head it.
7:09 PM PT: So, here comes Ted Nugent's nightmare: The president talking about reasonable gun control.
7:10 PM PT: So, this line caused John Boehner to appear to roll his eyes: "If you want to vote no, that's your choice. But these proposals deserve a vote. Because in the two months since Newtown, more than a thousand birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries have been stolen from our lives by a bullet from a gun."
7:13 PM PT: Meteor Blades has been tracking the applause breaks and counts four dozen so far, none more passionate than the one following the president's demand that the victims of gun violence deserve a vote on gun control measures.
7:14 PM PT: Another great moment: "We should follow the example of a North Miami woman named Desiline Victor. When she arrived at her polling place, she was told the wait to vote might be six hours. And as time ticked by, her concern was not with her tired body or aching feet, but whether folks like her would get to have their say. Hour after hour, a throng of people stayed in line in support of her. Because Desiline is 102 years old. And they erupted in cheers when she finally put on a sticker that read 'I Voted.'"
