Winners pick the cabinet

President Barack Obama shakes hands with former Sen. Chuck Hagel in the East Room of the White House, Jan. 7, 2013. The President nominated Sen. Hagel for Secretary of Defense and John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, second from left, for Director of the CIA. Also pictured on stage are acting CIA Director Michael Morrell, left, and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, right. (Official White House Photo by Chuck Kennedy) Winning has its prerogatives. Fresh off trying to convince the world that Mitt Romney was all that and more, the Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin actually thinks the fight over Chuck Hagel's nomination to the Pentagon has electoral relevance.
Hagel could still lose even if Schumer supports him (either because of a GOP filibuster or near-unanimous disapproval from Republicans and a few breakaway Democrats up for reelection in 2014).
There is absolutely no way that Hagel is an issue in 2014, not even close. Now I wouldn't put it past Senate Republicans to try and filibuster this nomination. Heck, that possibility should provide extra motivation to Senate Democrats to reform the filibuster rules.

But saying this as someone who is displeased with the Hagel nomination'the next time Republicans want to decide who gets to sit in the president's cabinet they should win the election first.

p.s.:

GOP (w/no Jewish senators) going to have a tough time saying Hagel is anti-semitic when 12 (or 13 w/Frank) Jewish Dem senators vote for him
