Hagel could still lose even if Schumer supports him (either because of a GOP filibuster or near-unanimous disapproval from Republicans and a few breakaway Democrats up for reelection in 2014).There is absolutely no way that Hagel is an issue in 2014, not even close. Now I wouldn't put it past Senate Republicans to try and filibuster this nomination. Heck, that possibility should provide extra motivation to Senate Democrats to reform the filibuster rules.
But saying this as someone who is displeased with the Hagel nomination'the next time Republicans want to decide who gets to sit in the president's cabinet they should win the election first.
